Your Side Windows Are Not Protecting You From UV

A peer-reviewed study measured UV-A blockage across 29 vehicles. Windshields averaged 96%. Side windows averaged 71%, and one was as low as 44%. Here's what that means for your skin, your eyes, and your interior.

Most people assume car glass handles ultraviolet radiation. It's glass, it's between you and the sun, the car is a sealed environment — the assumption is reasonable.

For your windshield, it's largely correct. For the window next to your left arm, it isn't.

The study

In 2016, ophthalmologist Brian Boxer Wachler published a study in JAMA Ophthalmology measuring UV-A transmission through the windshields and driver's-side windows of 29 automobiles from 15 manufacturers.

The results:

  • Windshields: 96% average UV-A blockage (range 95–98%). Consistent across essentially every vehicle tested.
  • Side windows: 71% average UV-A blockage (range 44% to 96%).

Two findings there, and the second is arguably more important than the first. Side windows block less UV-A, and they block it wildly inconsistently. A 44% and a 96% both came off dealer lots. You have no way to know which one you're driving without measuring it.

Why the difference

It comes down to construction. Windshields are laminated — two layers of glass bonded around a plastic interlayer, mandated for structural and occupant-safety reasons. That interlayer happens to be an excellent UV absorber. Side windows are typically tempered single-pane glass, designed to shatter into blunt granules on impact. Tempering is a safety feature; it does nothing for UV.

The UV protection in your windshield is essentially a side effect of a structural requirement. Nobody engineered your side glass for it, so you get whatever that particular glass formulation happens to provide.

What this shows up as in the real world

Dermatologists have documented asymmetric photoaging and asymmetric skin cancer distribution in populations that drive a lot — more damage on the driver's side. In the United States that's the left side of the face, the left arm, and the left hand. In left-hand-drive-inverted countries, it appears on the right. The pattern follows the window, not the anatomy.

This isn't a fringe observation, and it makes sense given the measurements above: it's cumulative exposure through inconsistently protective glass, over years of commuting.

Two clarifications, because precision matters here:

  • UV-A and UV-B behave differently. UV-B, the primary sunburn wavelength, is largely stopped by ordinary window glass. UV-A penetrates deeper into the skin, is implicated in photoaging and skin cancer, and passes through untreated side glass much more readily. This is why you can accumulate damage through a window without ever getting a sunburn through one.
  • Window film is not a replacement for sunscreen. It addresses one specific exposure route. It's an excellent, permanent, no-effort-required addition to sun protection, not a substitute for it.

What quality film does about it

This is the part of window film that isn't a matter of degree. Quality film — including inexpensive film — blocks 99% or more of UV, because the polyester substrate and its UV inhibitors do most of that work regardless of shade or price tier.

The formal benchmark is the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation. To carry it, a UV window film must provide laboratory data demonstrating it blocks 99% or more of both UVA and UVB. Multiple manufacturers' films carry it. The Foundation itself recommends UV window film as a sun-protection measure.

The International Window Film Association also runs third-party certification, with member films submitted for independent laboratory testing against their claimed performance.

The practical takeaway: if UV is your primary concern, you do not need dark film. A clear or near-clear 70%+ VLT film blocks 99% of UV just as effectively as limo tint. You can have full UV protection on every window in your car — front doors included — while staying comfortably within Oregon's transmittance limits, because UV rejection and visible darkness are independent properties.

That surprises a lot of people, and it's one of the more genuinely useful facts in this whole industry.

Cumulative UV-A exposure is associated with cataract formation, which is what motivated an ophthalmologist to run the study in the first place. Same logic, same fix.

Your interior

UV is a primary driver of fading and material degradation — dashboards, leather, door cards, and the plastics that go chalky and then crack. Anyone who has owned a car through a decade of sun knows the dash-top failure pattern.

To be accurate about it: UV is the largest contributor to fading, but not the only one. Visible light and heat also degrade materials, which is why no film can promise zero fading. What quality film does is remove the dominant cause and substantially reduce the others. In practice that's the difference between a dash that's fine at ten years and one that's crazed at six.

The same applies at home. If you have hardwood, art, textiles, or furniture in a room with strong afternoon sun, UV-blocking film is the cheapest intervention available — far cheaper than replacing the floor, and it doesn't require you to keep the blinds closed on the view you paid for.

What to actually do

  1. Don't assume your car protects you. Based on the measured range, it might block 96% of UV-A or it might block 44%.
  2. Prioritize the driver's side. That's where the documented asymmetry shows up.
  3. You don't need it dark. Clear film at 70%+ VLT gets you the full 99% UV benefit and keeps every window legal.
  4. Look for the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal or IWFA certification rather than an unverified percentage on a brochure.
  5. Think about the house too, especially south- and west-facing rooms.
